Epithelialimmune

Epithelialimmune is a term that refers to the immune cells found within or closely associated with epithelial tissues. Epithelial cells form the outer layer of the skin, line the surfaces of organs, and form glands. These tissues act as a primary barrier against pathogens, and the epithelial immune system plays a crucial role in protecting these vulnerable interfaces.

The epithelial immune system is a specialized branch of the innate and adaptive immune systems. It includes a variety of immune cells such as intraepithelial lymphocytes (IELs), which are lymphocytes that reside directly within the epithelial layer. These IELs can be T cells or natural killer (NK) cells and are important for detecting and eliminating infected or damaged cells. Other immune cells found in the underlying lamina propria, a layer of connective tissue beneath the epithelium, also contribute to epithelial immunity. These include macrophages, dendritic cells, mast cells, and various types of lymphocytes.

The functions of epithelialimmune cells are diverse. They participate in surveillance, recognizing danger signals from invading microbes or cellular stress. Upon detection, they can initiate inflammatory responses, recruit other immune cells, and directly attack pathogens. Epithelialimmune cells also contribute to immune tolerance, preventing inappropriate responses to harmless substances like food antigens or commensal bacteria that reside on epithelial surfaces. Furthermore, they play a role in tissue repair and regeneration after injury. The complex interplay between epithelial cells and resident immune cells is essential for maintaining tissue homeostasis and defending the body from infection.
