Epee

The epee is a thrusting sword and one of the three weapons used in modern competitive fencing, alongside foil and saber. It features a stiff blade that is heavier than those of the other weapons and ends in a pressure-sensitive tip. A large bell guard protects the hand, and grip styles range from simple to pistol-like designs. The blade and guard are designed to withstand the impacts of competitive bouts while allowing precise, tip-based scoring.

Rules and scoring: In epee, the entire body is a valid target, and there is no concept of right-of-way or priority. A touch is scored when the opponent’s scoring button is depressed by the tip at the moment of contact, detected by electronic scoring equipment. Because there is no priority rule, both fencers can score on the same exchange, resulting in a double touch in competitive bouts.

History and use: The epee developed from European dueling swords in the 19th century and was established as a fencing weapon in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It has been part of the Olympic fencing program since the early 20th century and remains a central weapon in national and international competitions. Modern epée competition is conducted under standardized equipment and judging rules maintained by the sport’s governing bodies, notably the Fédération Internationale d'Escrime (FIE).
