Epämetalliyhdisteet, or non-metal compounds, are chemical compounds that do not contain any metallic elements. These compounds are primarily composed of non-metals, which are elements that do not conduct electricity and are typically poor conductors of heat. Non-metal compounds can be further categorized into two main groups: molecular compounds and covalent network compounds.

These compounds are typically gases, liquids, or low-melting-point solids at room temperature. They are often volatile and have low boiling points due to the weak intermolecular forces between their molecules.

Covalent network compounds, on the other hand, have a three-dimensional network of atoms bonded together by covalent bonds. Examples include diamond (C), silicon dioxide (SiO2), and graphite (C). These compounds are typically solids with high melting and boiling points due to the strong covalent bonds between their atoms. They are also generally hard and brittle.

Non-metal compounds play a crucial role in various industries, such as electronics, pharmaceuticals, and materials science. For instance, silicon is a key component in the production of semiconductors, while carbon dioxide is used in carbonated beverages and as a refrigerant. Ammonia is used as a fertilizer and in the production of various chemicals.
