Epäaromaattisten refers to chemical compounds that lack aromaticity. Aromaticity is a property of certain cyclic, planar molecules with a delocalized pi electron system that confers unusual stability and reactivity. Molecules that do not meet the criteria for aromaticity are considered non-aromatic.

The definition of aromaticity, particularly Hückel's rule, is central to understanding what is not aromatic. Hückel's rule states that for a planar, cyclic molecule to be aromatic, it must have a number of pi electrons equal to 4n+2, where n is a non-negative integer. Molecules that are cyclic and planar but have a different number of pi electrons, such as 4n pi electrons, are often classified as antiaromatic. However, the term epäaromaattisten generally encompasses all compounds that do not exhibit aromatic properties, including antiaromatic ones as well as non-cyclic or non-planar systems.

Non-aromatic compounds typically exhibit reactivity more akin to their analogous non-cyclic structures, such as alkenes or alkynes. They do not possess the enhanced stability or the characteristic electrophilic substitution reactions associated with aromatic systems. Examples of epäaromaattisten compounds include alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, saturated cyclic compounds like cyclohexane, and even some cyclic molecules that might appear to have a delocalized pi system but fail to meet the planarity or electron count requirements for aromaticity. The study of epäaromaattisten compounds is crucial for a comprehensive understanding of organic chemistry and reaction mechanisms.
