Enzymeproteins, commonly referred to as enzymes, are a class of proteins that act as biological catalysts. Almost all metabolic processes in a cell require enzyme catalysis to occur at a speed sufficient for life. Each enzyme is specific for a particular substrate or a small group of related substrates, meaning it binds to and acts upon only certain molecules. This specificity arises from the unique three-dimensional structure of the enzyme, particularly its active site, which is a region where the substrate binds and the chemical reaction takes place. This precise fit between the enzyme and its substrate is often described by the "lock and key" model or the more refined "induced fit" model.

Enzymes are synthesized by ribosomes within cells and are composed of chains of amino acids folded into complex structures. Their activity can be influenced by various factors, such as temperature, pH, and the presence of inhibitors or activators. Optimal conditions vary greatly between different enzymes. For instance, digestive enzymes in the stomach function best in an acidic environment, while those in the small intestine prefer a more alkaline pH. Understanding enzyme function is fundamental to biochemistry and has led to numerous applications in medicine, industry, and research.
