These organisms can be cultured in industrial settings to produce specific enzymes for various applications. This is known as industrial enzyme production. The process typically involves selecting a microbial strain known for its high enzyme yield, optimizing growth conditions such as temperature, pH, and nutrient availability, and then inducing the production of the desired enzyme. After fermentation, the enzyme is separated from the microbial cells and purified.

In multicellular organisms, enzymes are produced by specialized cells. For example, digestive enzymes are synthesized in the pancreas and the lining of the stomach and intestines. Hormones, which are also proteins and often function as signaling molecules, are produced by endocrine glands. The genetic code within DNA dictates the specific sequence of amino acids that form an enzyme, and this information is transcribed into RNA and then translated into protein by ribosomes. The folding and modification of the polypeptide chain are crucial for the enzyme to achieve its functional three-dimensional structure. Enzyme production is tightly controlled to meet the organism's needs and prevent overproduction, which could be harmful.
