Entgleitest

Entgleitest is a term used in speculative mineralogy and science fiction to denote a hypothetical mineral notable for slip-prone crystalline layers. The name combines entgleiten, German for “to slip away” or “to derail,” with the common mineral suffix -ite, signaling a mineral in models and narratives.

In standard theoretical descriptions, entgleitest is modeled as a layered silicate with variable metal cations, typically represented as a transition-metal–rich framework (M)Si2O5 with M elements such as Mg, Fe, or Al. Crystallography is assigned to a monoclinic or orthorhombic system, with a Mohs hardness around 5 and a density near 3.3–3.6 g/cm3. A distinctive feature in many simulations is anisotropic mechanical response, yielding reduced shear strength along certain planes and enabling slip under stress. Some models also attribute piezoelectric or dielectric effects to its layered structure.
