Ennakonpidätysasiat, also known as advance deduction matters, refer to the legal and administrative processes in Finland related to withholding taxes from income. This system ensures that taxes are paid throughout the year rather than as a lump sum at the end of the tax year. The primary purpose of ennakonpidätysasiat is to facilitate tax collection and to help taxpayers manage their tax obligations more smoothly.

The Finnish Tax Administration (Verohallinto) is responsible for overseeing these matters. Individuals and employers have specific obligations within this system. Employers are required to calculate and withhold income tax, social security contributions, and other potential deductions from their employees' wages based on information provided by the Tax Administration. This withholding is then remitted to the state.

For individuals, the Tax Administration issues a preliminary tax percentage, known as the ennakonpidätysprosentti, which is communicated to employers. This percentage is determined based on an individual's estimated annual income and deductions. Taxpayers can influence their preliminary tax percentage by submitting a tax card (verokortti) or electronic tax card (verkkoverokortti) to their employer, which contains the relevant withholding information. Adjustments to the preliminary tax percentage can be made during the tax year if income or circumstances change significantly.

Ennakonpidätysasiat also encompass situations where advance deductions are applied to other forms of income, such as rental income or business income, although the specific rules may vary. The aim is to align tax payments with the income earned, thus preventing large tax debts or refunds. This system is a fundamental part of Finland's self-assessment tax system.
