Enginemen are individuals responsible for the operation and maintenance of engines, particularly in marine, industrial, or transportation contexts. Historically, this term was most commonly associated with steam engines, where enginemen would manage the boiler and engine room of ships, factories, or locomotives. Their duties included monitoring pressure and temperature, ensuring proper lubrication, and performing routine maintenance to keep the machinery running efficiently and safely. In modern times, the term "engineman" is less frequently used as technology has advanced, and specialized roles have emerged. In these cases, the modern equivalent often falls under the title of marine engineer or engine officer. The core responsibilities, however, persist: overseeing the power generation and propulsion systems, troubleshooting issues, and ensuring the continuous and reliable operation of the vessel's machinery.
