Energiajätettä refers to waste materials that still contain usable energy. This concept arises from the recognition that many discarded items, such as plastics, organic matter, and certain industrial byproducts, possess inherent energy potential that can be recovered. Instead of simply burying or incinerating these materials without energy capture, the focus shifts towards transforming them into a valuable resource.

Common methods for recovering energy from waste include incineration with energy recovery, also known as waste-to-energy (WtE) plants. These facilities burn waste under controlled conditions to produce heat, which can then be used to generate electricity or provide district heating. Another approach involves anaerobic digestion, where organic waste is broken down by microorganisms in the absence of oxygen, producing biogas that can be used as fuel. Gasification and pyrolysis are also employed to convert waste into synthesis gas or bio-oil, respectively, both of which can be further processed into energy.

The management of energiajätettä is a key component of modern waste management strategies aimed at reducing landfill dependence, conserving natural resources, and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. By extracting energy from waste, communities can decrease their reliance on fossil fuels and contribute to a more circular economy.
