Energiadispersiivistä

Energiadispersiivistä, often abbreviated as EDX or EDS, refers to energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. It is a technique used for elemental analysis and chemical characterization of a sample. EDX works by bombarding a specimen with a beam of electrons, typically from a scanning electron microscope (SEM) or a transmission electron microscope (TEM). When these high-energy electrons interact with the atoms in the sample, they can cause the emission of characteristic X-rays.

Each element in the periodic table emits X-rays at specific, unique energies when excited. An EDX detector measures the energy and intensity of these emitted X-rays. By analyzing the spectrum of X-ray energies, the elemental composition of the sample can be identified. The intensity of the X-rays at a particular energy is proportional to the concentration of that element in the sample.

EDX is a versatile technique used across various scientific disciplines, including materials science, geology, biology, and archaeology. It can provide qualitative and quantitative elemental analysis with good spatial resolution, making it suitable for examining microstructures and surface compositions. The technique is non-destructive in most cases, allowing for further analysis of the same sample. However, it is generally limited to detecting elements with atomic numbers greater than beryllium, as lighter elements produce X-rays with very low energies that are difficult to detect.
