Endotelfunktion
Endotelfunktion, also known as endothelial function, refers to the ability of the endothelium, the thin layer of cells that lines the interior surface of blood vessels, to perform its physiological functions. The endothelium plays a crucial role in maintaining vascular homeostasis by regulating blood flow, preventing thrombosis, and mediating the exchange of substances between the blood and surrounding tissues. Endothelial dysfunction occurs when the endothelium loses its ability to perform these functions effectively, often due to factors such as aging, hypertension, diabetes, and smoking. This dysfunction can lead to various cardiovascular diseases, including atherosclerosis and hypertension. Endothelial function can be assessed using non-invasive methods such as flow-mediated dilation (FMD) and endothelium-dependent vasodilation (EDV). Improving endothelial function through lifestyle modifications, such as a healthy diet, regular exercise, and avoiding smoking, can help prevent and manage cardiovascular diseases.
