Endokrinologer are physicians who specialize in the endocrine system, a network of glands and hormones that regulate metabolism, growth, reproduction, and energy balance. They diagnose and treat disorders caused by hormonal imbalances or gland dysfunction, and they study how hormones influence body processes.

The field covers conditions such as diabetes mellitus, thyroid diseases (hypo- and hyperthyroidism, goiter), adrenal disorders (Cushing's syndrome, Addison's disease), pituitary disorders (acromegaly, pituitary insufficiency), osteoporosis and calcium/metabolic disorders, obesity, and fertility or puberty-related issues. Pediatric endocrinology addresses similar problems in children and adolescents.

Endokrinologer use clinical evaluation, laboratory hormone tests, imaging (ultrasound, CT, MRI), and stimulation or suppression tests to diagnose. Treatment may involve hormone replacement (insulin for diabetes or thyroid hormones, estrogens or testosterone for hypogonadism, growth hormone in deficiency), targeted medications that affect hormone action, and lifestyle interventions. They coordinate care with primary care physicians and other specialists.

Training typically includes medical school, a residency in internal medicine or pediatrics, and a fellowship in endocrinology; board certification or equivalent credentials are required or expected in many countries. Subspecialties such as pediatric endocrinology, reproductive endocrinology, and metabolic/endocrine oncology exist.

Endokrinologer work in hospitals, clinics, academic centers, and sometimes private practice, and they contribute to research, clinical guidelines, and education. They play a central role in managing chronic endocrine diseases and in guiding patients through complex treatment plans.
