In the United States, the Clean Air Act sets ambient and source-level limits, complemented by state programs and, in some sectors, cap-and-trade mechanisms. Other countries implement permits, standards, and market-based tools tailored to national contexts.

Emissionskontrol is applied across sectors, including transportation, power generation, manufacturing, and construction. Effectiveness depends on technology suitability, maintenance, fuel quality, operational practices, and enforcement.
