Emae

Emae is a small island situated in the western part of the Federated States of Micronesia. It belongs to the state of Yap and lies approximately 240 kilometres southeast of the capital, Rongerik. The island covers an area of roughly 2.5 square kilometres and is characterized by low-lying, volcanic terrain interspersed with mangrove swamps and a central lagoon that is popular with local fishermen.

The population of Emae is estimated at around 200 residents, who primarily reside in a main settlement near the lagoon. The inhabitants practice subsistence agriculture and fishing, cultivating taro, yam, and coconut palms. Traditional Yapese customs remain strong on the island, and many families maintain ancestral burial sites within the cemetery grounds.

Historically, Emae was visited by European explorers in the 18th century, but it remained largely untouched by colonial administration until the American administration of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands after World War II. The island did not experience significant wartime activity and gained autonomy as part of the Federated States of Micronesia following its 1979 independence.

Infrastructure on Emae is limited; there is a small primary school, a community health outpost, and a modest harbor used for inter-island transport. Electricity is supplied by diesel generators, and communications are provided by satellite link. Because of its remote location and limited resources, Emae remains one of the less developed islands in Yap, attracting researchers and travelers interested in traditional Micronesian culture and the preservation of its natural environment.
