Elukvaliteedis

Elukvaliteedis is the Estonian term used to describe the quality of life, a multidimensional concept that captures the overall well-being and living conditions of individuals and communities. It encompasses both material conditions, such as income and employment, and non-material aspects, including health, education, housing, environment, safety, social support, and psychological well-being.

Measuring elukvaliteedis involves combining objective indicators (income levels, poverty rates, access to healthcare, education attainment, environmental quality, crime rates) with subjective assessments (life satisfaction, perceived health, sense of purpose). International frameworks, such as the OECD Better Life Initiative and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, influence national measurement practices, and many countries publish qualitative and quantitative indicators to track progress.

In policy and research, elukvaliteedis serves as a broad outcome metric for assessing welfare, social policy effectiveness, and human development. It supports cross-sector planning by highlighting trade-offs and synergies between economic growth and well-being, sustainability, and social cohesion. Critics note that quality-of-life measures can be culturally biased, subjective, and sensitive to how questions are framed and data collected, which can complicate cross-country comparisons.
