Elterlinien

Elterlinien is a term used in genealogy and family history research to refer to the ancestral lines of an individual. Specifically, it denotes the lines of descent from one's parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, and so on, extending back through generations. Each Elterlinie represents a unique path of heritage tracing back to a specific ancestor.

Typically, an individual has two primary Elterlinien: the paternal line (descent from the father) and the maternal line (descent from the mother). When tracing further back, these lines multiply. For example, at the grandparent level, there are four Elterlinien (paternal grandfather's father, paternal grandmother's mother, maternal grandfather's father, and maternal grandmother's mother). At the great-grandparent level, there are eight Elterlinien, and so on. The number of direct ancestral lines doubles with each preceding generation.
