Ellenjárványok, often translated as "counter-epidemics" or "anti-epidemics," refers to strategies and public health measures implemented to combat or mitigate the spread of infectious diseases, particularly in a historical context where modern medical understanding and interventions were limited. These approaches often emerged organically as communities faced outbreaks and sought ways to protect themselves.

Historically, ellenjárványok encompassed a range of practices. Quarantine, the isolation of individuals or groups suspected of being infected or exposed to a disease, was a common and often effective measure. This involved restricting movement and preventing contact with the wider population. Contact tracing, though not always formally recognized as such, also played a role. People would try to identify and distance themselves from those who had been in contact with the sick.

Public hygiene measures were another significant component. This included practices like thorough cleaning of public spaces, disposal of waste, and sometimes the prohibition of large gatherings to reduce transmission. In some instances, traditional remedies and folk medicine were employed, although their efficacy varied greatly.
