The core idea is bidirectional interaction: element A affects B, and B simultaneously affects A, with the strength and direction of exchange shaped by context, timing, and the properties of the elements involved. This emphasis on reciprocity helps explain how stable patterns and coordinated responses emerge from many interdependent parts.

In formal terms, elements are modeled as nodes in a directed, weighted graph. Pairwise reciprocity between elements i and j is represented by weights w_ij and w_ji, possibly with time delays. A common system-wide measure sums over pairs to quantify overall reciprocity, for example R = sum_{i<j} min(w_ij, w_ji) / sum_{i<j} max(w_ij, w_ji); many definitions allow time-varying weights and nonlinear effects to reflect context-dependent reciprocity.

Applications span social and organizational networks, ecological interactions, economic exchanges, and engineered systems such as collaborative robotics and distributed artificial intelligence.
