Elektronenbehandlungen, also known as electron beam therapy, is a type of radiation therapy used in medicine. It specifically employs a beam of high-energy electrons to treat superficial tumors. Unlike X-ray therapy which penetrates deeper into the body, electron beams deposit most of their energy within a relatively shallow depth. This makes them particularly suitable for treating cancers located close to the skin's surface, such as certain skin cancers, or for treating lymph nodes that are not deeply situated.

The treatment is delivered by a linear accelerator, a machine that generates the electron beam. During a session, the patient lies on a treatment couch, and the linear accelerator is positioned to direct the electron beam precisely at the targeted area. The dose of radiation is carefully calculated to destroy cancer cells while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissues. Electron beam therapy is a non-invasive procedure, meaning it does not require surgery. Patients typically undergo multiple treatment sessions over a period of weeks. The side effects are generally limited to the treated area and can include skin redness, dryness, or irritation, similar to a sunburn. The specific energy of the electrons can be adjusted to control the depth of penetration, allowing for tailored treatment plans.
