Elektrolytté

Elektrolytté is a term used in some languages to denote a substance or mixture that contains free ions and can conduct electricity in a solution or molten state. It is the regional spelling variant of what is commonly called an electrolyte in electrochemistry.

The term is a cognate of the English electrolyte and appears with accent marks in various regional linguistic traditions; in practice, it refers to the same class of substances studied in electrochemistry. Elektrolytté plays a central role in processes that rely on ionic conduction, such as charging a battery or driving electroplating reactions.

Key properties include ionic dissociation, conductivity that increases with ion concentration up to a limit, and an electrochemical stability window determined by solvent and ions. The performance depends on temperature, the nature of the solvent or solvent mixture, and the specific ions present in the dissolved species. The choice of elektrolytté affects ion mobility, viscosity, and chemical compatibility with electrodes.

Main applications are in energy storage and conversion, such as batteries and supercapacitors, electroplating, electrolysis, and various sensors. Common examples are aqueous salt or acid solutions (for example, saltwater or sulfuric acid solutions), molten salts used in metal processing, and solid or gel electrolytes used in solid-state devices. Room-temperature ionic liquids and polymer electrolytes are also classified as elektrolytté in some literature.

Safety and handling: elektrolytté substances can be corrosive, toxic, or reactive; proper containment, ventilation, and disposal are required.
