Elektrofiilsus

Elektrofiilsus refers to the chemical property of an atom, molecule, or ion to attract a pair of electrons. This attraction is often associated with a partial or full positive charge, as electrons are negatively charged. Species exhibiting elektrofiilsus are called electrophiles, meaning "electron-loving."

Electrophiles are typically electron-deficient and seek out electron-rich areas in other molecules to form new chemical bonds. Common examples of electrophiles include Lewis acids, such as aluminum chloride (AlCl3) or boron trifluoride (BF3), which have an incomplete octet of electrons. Halogens like bromine (Br2) or chlorine (Cl2) can also act as electrophiles when they are polarized, for instance, in the presence of a Lewis acid catalyst. Carbocations, which possess a positively charged carbon atom, are potent electrophiles. Similarly, molecules with polar double or triple bonds, such as aldehydes and ketones, can exhibit electrophilic character at the carbon atom of the carbonyl group due to the electronegativity of oxygen.

The concept of elektrofiilsus is fundamental in understanding organic reaction mechanisms, particularly electrophilic addition and electrophilic substitution reactions. In these reactions, an electrophile attacks a nucleophile (an electron-rich species) to form a new bond. The strength of an electrophile's attraction for electrons is quantified by various scales, though the term itself primarily describes the tendency to accept electrons.
