Elavhõbedaklaastermeetrid, also known as mercury-sealed float meters or simply mercury meters, are a type of measuring instrument used to determine the volume or mass of liquids, particularly in industrial settings. They function by utilizing the principle of buoyancy and the displacement of a liquid. At their core, these meters typically consist of a sealed container, often made of glass or metal, partially filled with mercury. A float, usually made of a material less dense than the liquid being measured but denser than mercury, is suspended within the mercury. As the liquid level rises or falls in the container, it also affects the mercury level. The float's position within the mercury, which is directly related to the mercury's displacement and therefore the volume of the liquid, is then indicated on a calibrated scale. This scale allows for direct reading of the liquid's volume.
