Ticks, also arachnids, are larger than mites and typically attach to the host to feed on blood for extended periods, often transmitting diseases.

Another significant group consists of protozoa. While many protozoa are free-living, some are obligate or facultative ektoparasites, particularly on aquatic animals. For example, certain species can attach to fish gills or skin.
