Ekstrinsust

Ekstrinsust is a term used in philosophy and related disciplines to denote the quality of being dependent on external relations or conditions rather than on the internal constitution of an entity. In Estonian-language usage, it corresponds to the concept of extrinsicness or extrinsic properties, and it is often discussed in contrast to intrinsic qualities.

The central distinction is between intrinsic and extrinsic properties. Intrinsic properties are those a thing possesses in itself, independently of external factors. Extrinsic properties depend on how the thing relates to other things or on the surrounding context. Examples include a thing’s location, relative relationships (such as being taller than another object), or external circumstances that affect how a property is experienced or assessed. In philosophy, discussions of ekstrinsust frequently involve how much a thing’s value, meaning, or function rests on external connections rather than on its own nature.

In value theory and ethics, extrinsic value refers to value that something has because of its consequences, usefulness, or relations to other goods, rather than because of its inherent features. The distinction between intrinsic and extrinsic value is widely debated: some theories treat many apparent intrinsic claims as relational or context-dependent, while others uphold a robust division between the two realms.
