Ekstension

Ekstension is a term used across several disciplines to denote the act or result of extending something, or a specific technical sense borrowed from the English word extension. In computing, ekstension most commonly refers to software extensions or plug-ins that add features to an application or browser. Extensions are typically modular and distributed separately from the core program, enabling customization while raising considerations about compatibility, performance, and security.

In mathematics and logic, ekstension describes the relation between a given structure and a larger one that contains it as a substructure, preserving essential properties. Examples include field extensions in algebra or extension models in logic. The central idea is to enlarge the object while maintaining its defining relations.

In linguistics and semantics, ekstension can refer to the extension of a term—the set of all entities to which the term applies. This is the external reference of a predicate, as opposed to its sense or intension.

In information technology and file handling, some languages use ekstension to mean the file extension—the suffix following a period in a filename that indicates the file format and often the associated program.
