Ekspireerimine refers to the process of a substance, often a medication or food product, reaching or exceeding its designated expiration date. This date, typically marked on the packaging, indicates the period during which the manufacturer guarantees the product's full potency, quality, and safety when stored correctly. Beyond this date, the product may begin to degrade, leading to a loss of effectiveness, a change in physical characteristics, or the potential for harmful bacterial growth.

The concept of expiration dates is crucial for maintaining public health and ensuring product efficacy. For pharmaceuticals, expired medications might become less potent, rendering them ineffective for treating illnesses. In some cases, the chemical compounds within a medication can break down into substances that are no longer safe for consumption.
