Eksiterte is a term used in speculative fiction and philosophy to describe a category of entities, events, or ideas defined by an ambiguous ontological status that lies between existence and nonexistence. It functions primarily as a thought experiment or literary device rather than a rigorously defined scientific class, and its meaning varies across authors and contexts.

The word derives from eksistere, the Norwegian verb meaning “to exist.” The form eksiterte is a stylized usage employed by writers to signal a past or intermittent mode of being. Because it is not part of a fixed philosophical vocabulary, definitions and applications of eksiterte differ from one text to another.

The term emerged in online science fiction communities, philosophy blogs, and Nordic speculative fiction around 2018–2020, and has since appeared in several short stories and essays. It is used to frame discussions about memory, time, and reality by labeling entities or events with a tentative or fluctuating status.

In typical treatments, eksiterte are described as having a definite moment of existence in the past, some potential causal influence on the present, and a capacity to be perceived or remembered by observers.
