Eitrandi

Eitrandi is a fictional port city-state in the northern archipelago of Eldoria. It functions as a major trading hub and shipbuilding center, controlling a network of sheltered harbors that link inland regions to distant maritime routes. The city has long been a crossroads for mariners, traders, and artisans.

Etymology. The name is of debated origin. Some scholars trace it to Old Norse-inspired roots interpreted as "shore of the wind" or "place of the smith," while others connect it with mythic figures associated with the sea. No consensus exists.

History. Eitrandi began as a fishing hamlet on a natural harbor. It grew after establishing a formal harbor authority and signing treaties with neighboring polities. During successive regional conflicts it retained autonomy through fortifications and a strong mercantile network, eventually becoming the dominant city-state among the northern isles.

Geography. Located on a cluster of rocky isles, Eitrandi is ringed by shallow bays and tidal channels. The principal harbor, Brinehaven, accommodates trading fleets, fishing vessels, and shipyards. The surrounding countryside supports timber and salt production.

Economy and society. The economy centers on fisheries, saltworks, timber, and shipbuilding. Trade in dried cod, rope, and pottery helps sustain urban growth. Political life is dominated by the Merchants' Council and a maritime court; the city maintains a standing militia to guard its harbor.

Culture and landmarks. Eitrandi hosts the annual Brine Festival, celebrating seafaring and harvest. Notable sites include the Sable Gate fortress, the Drydock District, and the Glass Market, where cargoes from across the archipelago are mixed with local crafts.
