Eitodennäköisyysnäytteistysmenetelmien, or non-probability sampling methods, are techniques used in research to select participants for a study where random selection is not possible or practical. Unlike probability sampling, these methods do not give every member of the population an equal chance of being included in the sample. This can introduce bias into the study, meaning the sample may not accurately represent the broader population.

Several types of non-probability sampling exist. Convenience sampling, for instance, involves selecting participants who are readily available and easy to access. This is often the simplest and most cost-effective method but is highly prone to bias. Quota sampling aims to create a sample that mirrors the proportions of certain characteristics (like age or gender) within the population, but the selection within those quotas is still non-random. Purposive sampling involves the researcher using their judgment to select participants who they believe are most suitable for the research objectives. Snowball sampling is used when the target population is difficult to reach; existing participants are asked to recommend others who might fit the study's criteria.

While non-probability sampling methods can be useful for exploratory research, pilot studies, or when resources are limited, researchers must acknowledge their limitations. The findings from studies using these methods may not be generalizable to the entire population, and caution should be exercised when drawing conclusions. The potential for selection bias is a significant drawback that researchers must consider and, if possible, mitigate.
