Eipainotteisia

Eipainotteisia is a term used in Finnish linguistics to describe linguistic elements or constructions that are not marked for emphasis or focus. The word combines ei meaning not with painotteinen meaning emphasized. It is used especially in studies of information structure, discourse, and prosody. In Finnish, emphasis is often conveyed through intonation and context rather than morphology; eipainotteisia elements thus refer to parts of sentences that do not bear the focal point in a given clause or discourse segment.

In practice, researchers describe two broad classes of constructions in Finnish: painotteisia (emphatic or focused) and eipainotteisia (non-emphatic). The boundary between them can be gradient, and some items may shift focus depending on discourse context. Eipainotteisia uses include neutral predicates, surface forms with standard word order, and items that are given or shared knowledge. By contrast, painotteisia configurations often employ topicalization, clefting, or particles to mark emphasis.
