Einzelwort

Einzelwort is a term used in German linguistics and lexicography to refer to a single word unit that can function independently in sentence syntax and carry a discrete lexical meaning. It is often contrasted with multiword expressions or fixed phrases that behave as a single unit in use. The concept helps distinguish basic word units from longer constructions such as idioms, collocations, or compounds that function collectively rather than as separate, freely standing words.

In practice, what counts as an Einzelwort can vary by descriptive framework. Generally, simple open-class words such as nouns, verbs, adjectives, and prepositions are treated as Einzelwörter. The term may also be linked to the lemma or base form of a word, which can then be inflected in various ways (for example, Hund as the lemma for Hunde, or gehen as the lemma for geht, ging, gegangen). However, there is not a single universal rule, and some analyses may treat certain inflected forms as distinct units, while others consider them forms of the same Einzelwort.

Applications of the concept appear in dictionary organization, language teaching, and corpus linguistics. In dictionaries, Einzelwörter are typically the entries (lemmas) that generate inflectional forms. In corpora, separating Einzelwörter from multiword expressions aids in frequency counting, part-of-speech tagging, and lexical analysis.
