Einzelobjekt

Einzelobjekt is a German term used in several disciplines to denote a single, concrete object as opposed to a set, class, or abstract generalization. The term derives from Einzel meaning single or individual and Objekt meaning object. In philosophy and epistemology, it often contrasts with Allgemeinbegriff or Allgemeinheit, highlighting the distinction between a unique instance and a universal concept.

In ontology, an Einzelobjekt refers to a particular thing with a determinate identity, as opposed to a class or collection of things sharing essential features.

In museums, archives, and bibliographic cataloging, Einzelobjekt denotes an item that is registered as an independent entity with its own provenance, physical description, and catalog record. Such objects are documented with a separate inventory number, measurements, materials, and condition notes, and may be exhibited individually or as part of a curated display. This contrasts with Objektgruppen or Serien, where multiple items are grouped together under a single record.

In practical use, identifying an item as an Einzelobjekt affects conservation, loan, insurance, and scholarly referencing, since each object has a unique history and physical attributes. The term can also appear in education and research to emphasize attention to a concrete instance rather than to a general type.
