Einmassenschwungrad
Einmassenschwungrad, meaning single-mass flywheel, is a component found in internal combustion engines, particularly in vehicles with manual transmissions. Its primary function is to store rotational energy and smooth out the power delivery from the engine. The engine's combustion process produces power in discrete pulses, which can lead to jerky acceleration and vibration. The flywheel, a heavy disc, absorbs these pulses through its inertia. As the engine produces power, the flywheel spins faster, storing energy. When the power pulse subsides, the flywheel releases this stored energy, maintaining a more consistent rotational speed. This results in a smoother running engine and a more comfortable driving experience.
In vehicles with manual transmissions, the Einmassenschwungrad also serves as a mounting surface for the clutch.
