Ehkäisylaastarit, also known as contraceptive patches, are a form of hormonal birth control. They are thin, beige, square-shaped patches that are applied to the skin. The patch releases hormones, estrogen and progestin, which are absorbed through the skin into the bloodstream. These hormones work to prevent pregnancy in several ways, primarily by stopping ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovary), thickening cervical mucus to prevent sperm from reaching the egg, and thinning the uterine lining to make implantation less likely.
