Ehitised

Ehitiset, in Estonian, refer to built structures. The term denotes any fixed, man-made construction on land or water that has a purpose and a designated location. Ehitised encompass a wide range of objects, from private residences and apartment buildings to public institutions, offices, factories, and other facilities, as well as infrastructure elements such as bridges, tunnels, roads, dams, and utility structures. In everyday use, ehitis is a broad category that includes both buildings and other types of constructed works.

Classification of ehitised typically follows function and form. Hooned are enclosed spaces designed for human use, including homes, schools, hospitals, administrative buildings, and commercial premises. Rajatised cover structures not primarily intended for occupancy, such as bridges, overpasses, pipelines, power plants, and waterworks. Ehitised can also be grouped by ownership, planning status, or construction method. The distinction between ehitis and more specific terms like hoone or rajatis is a matter of scope: ehitis is the overarching term for fixed, built structures.

Regulation and protection of ehitised are part of national and local planning and building systems. Construction and renovation typically require permits, adherence to zoning and safety standards, and registration in cadastral records. In addition, certain ehitised are protected as cultural heritage or monuments, and their preservation may be governed by heritage laws and conservation plans.
