Egyszínség, or monochromaticism, describes the use of a single hue or closely related colors—variations in value, saturation, and tone—in visual compositions. The term originates from the Greek words for “one” and “color,” and it has been a recognized principle in color theory and design for centuries. In the visual arts, egyszínség is employed to create harmony, focus, and a sense of cohesion. By limiting the palette, artists can explore texture, form, and contrast without the distraction of multiple colors. Photography often uses monochromatic schemes to emphasize light and shadow or to evoke mood, while graphic designers and UI developers apply egyszínség in branding to convey a strong, unified identity.

Historically, artists such as Cézanne and Kandinsky experimented with monochromatic palettes to study tonal relationships and the psychological impact of color. In contemporary design, egyszínség is prevalent in minimalist aesthetics where restraint and clarity are valued.
