Eftergymnasial

Eftergymnasial is a Swedish adjective meaning post-secondary or after high school. It is used to describe education and training that takes place after completing gymnasiet, the Swedish upper secondary school. In public discourse and policy, eftergymnasial utbildning is the umbrella term for all education beyond gymnasiet, including higher education and postsecondary vocational training.

The scope includes higher education offered by universities and university colleges, which leads to degrees such as bachelor and master. It also covers vocational and professional programs run by the higher vocational education system (yrkeshögskola), as well as municipal adult education (komvux) and folk high schools (folkhögskola). These programs have different aims, from academic studies to practical vocational training, and they issue different qualifications and credits.

Administration and quality are governed by Swedish authorities. Higher education is regulated by the government and overseen by agencies such as the Swedish Higher Education Authority (UKÄ). Yrkeshögskolor are regulated by the national agency for higher vocational education. Admission requirements and the awarding of degrees or diplomas depend on the program and institution.
