Efterbrännare

Efterbrännare is a Swedish term that translates to "afterburner" in English. It refers to a device used in jet engines to increase thrust for a limited period. This is achieved by injecting additional fuel into the hot exhaust gases exiting the turbine section of the engine. The increased temperature and volume of the exhaust gases result in a significant, though temporary, boost in thrust.

Afterburners are typically employed during situations requiring maximum performance, such as takeoff, combat maneuvers, or rapid acceleration. While they provide a substantial increase in power, they also consume fuel at a much higher rate and can generate higher exhaust temperatures, potentially stressing engine components. Consequently, afterburners are not used continuously.
