Effretikon

Effretikon is a municipality in the district of Pfäffikon in the canton of Zurich in Switzerland. It is located in the Glatt Valley, northeast of Zurich. The municipality was formed in 1924 through the merger of the former municipalities of Effretikon, Barmelweid, and Illnau. Effretikon is a railway hub, with connections to Zurich, Winterthur, and Uster.

The area of Effretikon has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with archaeological finds indicating settlements dating back to the Neolithic period. In Roman times, a road passed through the area. The first documented mention of Effretikon dates back to the 11th century. The municipality's economy was historically based on agriculture and handicrafts. In the 19th century, industrialization began, with the development of textile factories.
