Eestirootslase

Eestirootslase refers to a person of Swedish descent who lives or has lived in Estonia. The history of Swedes in Estonia dates back centuries, with significant settlements established along the coast and on the islands, particularly during the Swedish rule of Estonia in the 17th century. These communities, often referred to as "rannarootslased" (coastal Swedes), maintained their language, culture, and traditions for generations.

Historically, Estonian Swedes played a role in the economic and social life of the regions they inhabited. They were involved in fishing, farming, and trade. During the Soviet occupation of Estonia, many Estonian Swedes emigrated, particularly after World War II. This led to a significant decline in the number of Swedish speakers and the visibility of the Swedish minority in Estonia.

In contemporary Estonia, the number of people identifying as ethnically Swedish is relatively small. However, efforts are being made to preserve and promote the heritage of the Estonian Swedes. Cultural organizations and events help to maintain connections with the past and provide a platform for the community.
