Eemsmond

Eemsmond was a municipality located in the province of Groningen in the Netherlands. It was situated in the northern part of the province, along the coast of the Wadden Sea and the Dollart bay. The municipality was established on January 1, 1990, through the merger of the former municipalities of Uithuizen, Uithuizermeeden, Hefswal, Kantens, Oldenzijl, and Usquert.

The name Eemsmond referred to the mouth of the Ems river, which flows into the Dollart. The area was characterized by its polder landscape, tidal flats, and numerous small villages. Historically, the region was important for agriculture and fishing. Eemsmond was also known for its wind energy production, with several wind farms located in the municipality.

Key settlements within Eemsmond included Uithuizen, which served as the administrative center, and villages like Warffum, Baflo, and Pieterburen. Pieterburen was particularly famous for its seal rehabilitation center. The municipality had a diverse economy, with sectors ranging from agriculture and logistics to tourism and renewable energy.

In 2019, Eemsmond ceased to exist as an independent municipality. It merged with the municipalities of Appingedam and Delfzijl to form the new municipality of Eemsdelta. This administrative change aimed to create a more efficient and cohesive local government for the region. Despite the administrative merger, the geographical area formerly known as Eemsmond remains a distinct part of the Eemsdelta municipality, retaining its unique landscape and heritage.
