Uithuizen

Uithuizen is a village and former municipality in the province of Friesland, the Netherlands. It is located in the municipality of Smallingerland, about 10 kilometers east of Leeuwarden, the capital of Friesland. The village is situated on the banks of the Boorne, a tributary of the Lauwers.

The name Uithuizen is derived from the Old Frisian words "uut" meaning "outside" and "husen" meaning "houses," referring to the village's location outside the main settlement area. The village has a rich history, with archaeological findings dating back to the Bronze Age. The local church, St. Martinuskerk, was built in the 13th century and is a notable landmark in the village.

Uithuizen was a separate municipality until 1984, when it was merged with the neighboring municipalities of Boornsterhem and Wirdum to form the new municipality of Smallingerland. The village has a population of approximately 1,500 people and is known for its agricultural activities, including dairy farming and horticulture. The village also hosts an annual flower festival, which attracts visitors from across the region.

Despite its small size, Uithuizen offers a peaceful and picturesque setting, with its traditional Frisian architecture and natural surroundings. The village is well-connected to other parts of Friesland, with regular bus services and a nearby railway station.
