In written content it includes clarifying purpose and audience, organizing material, improving argument and flow, fact-checking, and correcting language and formatting. The term also extends to film and video editing, where the editor selects and orders footage, shapes pacing, and synchronizes sound and visuals.

Key stages commonly appear in editing projects. Planning and pre-editing set goals, audience, and scope, often with an outline or editorial brief. Developmental or structural editing focuses on overall organization, flow and argument or narrative arc. Content or line editing improves clarity, tone and style while preserving author intent. Copyediting tightly checks grammar, spelling, terminology, consistency, and accuracy. Fact-checking verifies data and sources, and proofreading catches remaining typos and formatting issues. Finalization includes applying a house style, formatting for publication, and preparing metadata or accessibility features.

Different roles serve different purposes. Developmental or substantive editors address big-picture changes to structure and content; copy editors handle grammar, terminology and consistency; line editors refine prose style; proofreaders perform the final quality pass. In audiovisual work, editors, assistant editors, colorists and sound editors work through stages such as rough cut, fine cut and finishing.

Tools and practices support the process, including track changes, comments, version control, and dedicated style guides. Ethical considerations emphasize accuracy, transparency about sources, avoidance of plagiarism and bias, and respect for author intent and copyright.
