Edisonskruen

Edisonskruen, also known as the Edison screw or E-type screw, is a standardized screw-thread form used for mounting incandescent and LED light bulbs in lamps and fixtures. It is named after its inventor, Thomas Edison, who developed the screw base for his early electric lamps. The primary benefit of the Edison screw is its ease of use, allowing for quick and secure installation and removal of light bulbs without the need for tools.

The standardization of the Edison screw is crucial for interoperability. This means a bulb with an Edison screw base will fit into any socket designed for that specific size of Edison screw. Common sizes include E27 (the most prevalent in Europe and many other parts of the world, with a diameter of 27 millimeters) and E14 (a smaller version, 14 millimeters in diameter, often found in decorative or smaller lamps). In North America, the E26 base is functionally equivalent to the European E27.

While originally designed for incandescent bulbs, the Edison screw fitting has been adapted for modern lighting technologies, most notably LED bulbs. This transition ensures that existing light fixtures can continue to be used with newer, more energy-efficient lighting options. The continued prevalence of the Edison screw highlights its enduring design and practicality in the field of lighting.
