Edastusliinidest, or transmission lines, are crucial components in electrical engineering responsible for carrying electrical energy from one point to another. They are essentially conductors designed to efficiently transport power over distances. The design and characteristics of transmission lines are vital for minimizing energy loss during this transport.

The most common type of transmission line consists of one or more conductors suspended by insulators on poles or towers. For high-voltage direct current (HVDC) transmission, two conductors are typically used, while for alternating current (AC) transmission, three conductors are common. The physical arrangement of these conductors, their spacing, and the height at which they are suspended all influence the line's electrical properties, such as its inductance, capacitance, and resistance.

Key parameters that define a transmission line include its characteristic impedance, propagation constant, and attenuation. These parameters are determined by the line's physical dimensions and the properties of the surrounding medium. Engineers carefully consider these factors to ensure the stability and efficiency of the power grid.

Transmission lines can be classified based on their length and voltage level. Short lines, typically less than 80 kilometers, are analyzed using simpler models. Medium-length lines, between 80 and 240 kilometers, require more complex models. Long transmission lines, exceeding 240 kilometers, necessitate sophisticated analysis due to significant effects like capacitance and inductance over their extensive length. The voltage level also plays a role, with higher voltages generally used for longer distances to reduce current and associated resistive losses.
