Ecija

Écija is a city and municipality in the province of Seville, part of the autonomous community of Andalusia in southern Spain. It lies in the Vega del Guadalquivir, on the plain near the Guadalquivir River, about 70 to 90 kilometers east of Seville. The town has a population in the around 40,000 inhabitants.

The area has ancient roots, with Iberian and Roman presence before it developed under Moorish rule. After the Christian reconquest, Écija grew as an important regional center, particularly during the early modern period. The city is known for its distinctive skyline, earned in part from numerous church towers, and it is commonly referred to as La ciudad de las torres (the city of towers).

Economy and geography: Écija sits in an agricultural landscape, with olives, cereals and other crops dominating the surrounding Vega. The local economy blends farming with services and light industry, reflecting its role as a regional urban center.

Culture and landmarks: The historic center preserves a concentration of churches, palaces and traditional houses that reflect its architectural variety, including several notable churches such as the Church of Santa María de la Asunción and the Church of San Juan. The city’s skyline of towers remains a defining feature. Écija hosts religious and cultural events throughout the year, with Holy Week processions among its most significant traditions.
