Eastney

Eastney is a district of the city of Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. It lies on the eastern edge of Portsea Island, facing the eastern entrance to Portsmouth Harbour and adjacent to Southsea. Administratively, it forms part of the Portsmouth City Council ward of Eastney and Craneswater.

History and features

Eastney developed in the 19th century around military installations that supported the naval base at Portsmouth. Eastney Barracks were built to house Royal Marines and other personnel serving in the harbour, while coastal defences such as Eastney Battery and related fortifications were constructed as part of the harbour’s fortifications.
