A single EUTM registration provides trademark protection in all current and future member states of the European Union. This offers a streamlined and cost-effective way for businesses to secure their brand identity across a vast market.

The EUTM system allows for the registration of various types of marks, including words, logos, slogans, and even shapes and sounds, provided they are distinctive and capable of distinguishing the goods or services of one undertaking from those of others. The application process involves filing with EUIPO, which then conducts an examination for absolute and relative grounds of refusal. Absolute grounds relate to the inherent registrability of the mark itself, such as lack of distinctiveness or being descriptive. Relative grounds involve potential conflicts with pre-existing trademarks.

Once registered, an EUTM is valid for ten years and can be renewed indefinitely. The EUTM system aims to harmonize trademark law across the EU, fostering a consistent and predictable environment for businesses operating within the single market.
