EUmedlem

EUmedlem is a term used in Swedish, Norwegian, Danish and related languages to denote a state that has joined the European Union. An EUmedlem participates in the EU’s legal order, institutions and decision-making processes, and gains access to the internal market and common policies. In common usage, it means a sovereign state that is a member of the European Union.

Rights of an EUmedlem include representation in EU decision-making through national governments in the Council of the European Union and in the European Council, as well as direct representation in the European Parliament through elected MEPs. EUmedlems also participate in the single market, the customs union, and common policies on trade, competition, agriculture, environment, and regional development. They may benefit from EU programs and funds and enjoy freedom of movement for people, goods, services and capital across member states.

Obligations include transposing and applying EU law (the acquis) within national systems, respecting democratic norms and the rule of law, maintaining budgetary discipline, and contributing to EU policies and finances. Member states negotiate, implement, and enforce EU rules at the national level and are bound by court decisions and enforcement mechanisms of the EU.

Joining the EU requires an applicant country to meet the Copenhagen criteria, begin formal accession negotiations, and ratify the accession treaty after approval by existing member states. As of 2024, the EU comprises 27 member states; 19 use the euro, and most but not all are part of the Schengen area. Some members have opt-outs or special arrangements. The United Kingdom previously was an EU member but left in 2020.
